I notice that no-one has reviewed this game for a few years, but I like to play these games when I'm on holiday, so I bumped into this one.
It was an excellent, classic, text adventure. Do play the first "Mansion" first to get into the story, but I think Mansion 2 is better and you can play it without playing the first one.
Puzzles were all logical (SPOILER although why did you have to drop the candle first before lighting it!), you have to keep the chemical mixtures in mind, right until the end and the double house area was clever. I like that there are various endings that are possible. I managed to get the incriminating evidence, and I didn't attempt to say no to the Uncle!
Great entertainment! Thanks very much.

This was a great game! I really appreciated the maps and teleportation feature, it made navigation so much less frustrating.
My only complaints/critiques are pretty minor - using items quickly felt clunky, because of the repetitive need to "Use _____ with ______", (but the ability to scroll through past commands made it easier) and there were times where the next step wasn't clear, ("How do I empty this vial?" By dropping it) so trial-and-error was a tedious necessity. But that's often part of text adventuring.
All in all, this game was awesome and I'm glad I was able to play it. :)

Has this game been changed since most of the comments were posted? In the second house, none of the comments seem to apply. There's no way to poke a hole in the ceiling, and instead one puts a potted plant in the sink and turns on the faucet. There is no seagull, no chair, no rag, no vodka... none of that is in the house at all. Instead, I have a ceramic flying duck that I pulled off the wall and a candle. I dropped the duck in the basement, thinking that's the solution there, and I can't pick it back up again (the game says I pick it up, but it stays in the basement and does not return to my inventory), so I can't tell if this is a glitch or if this is how it's supposed to work. Trying to light the candle with the lighter, whether in the bathroom or otherwise, only says, "It's not dark - there's no point in lighting the candle," eventhough the bathroom specifically tells you that it's dark. There are no wood objects in the house that I can pick up. I'm at a loss here, and my version of the game doesn't appear to be anything like what other comments are saying it should be like.

There doesn't seem to be a walkthrough or any published hints, so for anyone struggling:
(I'm not that good at writing hints, these may be a little too revealing, read as you need)
1: In your cell, try "take cot"
2: That force field says it will short out if overloaded. If only you had something heavy.
3: You know James Bond always got out of a cell by simply interacting with the guard.
3.5: Always take the dead guy's gun
4: To use a fingerprint reader, you need a finger.
5: The computer is difficult, so I'll just say it; the manual says what order the parts need to be assembled in, to assemble a part, "use part with motherboard" or "use motherboard with case" and then "use hard drive with case" followed by "take panel" and "use panel with case". And finally "use computer"
And that's as far as I got. Maybe I'll update.

Initially a departure from The Mansion I in terms of personality type: Mansion I was very much cheeky, while this direct-sequel doesn't start out that way so much. As far as gameplay goes, there are some differences too: Mansion I encouraged loose exploration (moving quickly from room to room) that would ultimately lead to locked areas if you didn't have the right item yet (M1 is very much a game of picking up and using items and rinsing and repeating that core concept, though a couple puzzles spiced it up a little), while Mansion II prefers to have the player spend more time in the environments before dealing with those roadblocks and moving on. Both styles certainly work respectably, though I found M1 to be higher on the pure fun factor and rewarding scales.

Played the first game and which ultimatley lead me to play this one. Great game, not too difficult so as to not totally frustrate and end in giving up, but challenging enough to flex the grey matter. Seeing as when this was created I would imagine another in the series unlikely, however it has provided inspiration to self create...

Great game Nick! I enjoyed it even more than the first one. The puzzles are challenging and smart and there's a lot of them. The map is large and lots of places to go and keeps it interesting.
Suggestions for improvement would be using more relevant comments after trying a command that didn't work. For example, use <item1> with <item2> could result in "You can't do anything with that on it's own". That comment would work better if you were trying to use <item1> by itself.
I liked the addition of Up and Down - much easier to use then Mansion I. Good use of descriptions for the rooms and the use of maps; it helped with visualization and made the game more interesting.
I can imagine a lot of time and effort was put into a game like this. Well done and I look forward to more from you!

Great game! Even better than the first one.
Don't know if the author is fixing bugs in an 8 year old game but I found one that prevents you from finishing. If you drop the flying duck in the same place as you find it, you can't pick it back up. It says you picked it up but it never goes in your inventory.
Other than that it's been fantastic!

This was awesome! Nice puzzles and all solvable without too much guesswork.
The only minor detail that I think could be improved (actually mainly true for The Mansion I) is the annoying use of stairs/elevators. After having made it work, a simple Up/Down would have been nicer than using the text box every time.
Want more :D

There was a comment earlier about getting Area B opened by taking the disk rfom the Area C computer to the Area B computer. I had already figured out that part, my only problem is I can't for the life of me find the stupid back-up tape. Help?

I need a hand here guys.
Your comments here and there have got me as far as the crane arm.
I have the incriminating DVD, and have got past the dog in 2 different ways, but cannot work out how to opn the security door or what to do once I have used the crane.
I don't know if it is a bug, but my text does not list the available exits for the entrance hall.
Cheers

Great game. Just completed it...and without any help, although was stuck a few times. As with one of the comments above, I was also wondering what's with all the ammunition? Did the ending withouth the DVD evidence first but knew that wasn't quite right. But can't find a sue of the spare ammunition. Anyway, great game indeed and great puzzles,. Very satisfying solving the double riddle in the old house.

A comment was all that I ever intended. I didn't actually rate the game as I have not finished it yet. I was using a friends I phone and it just cut out on me. So the four stars was unintentional. I have already put the fully charged battery into the crane and turned it on via the console. But there is nothing else to interact with in the room after that. I never made it out of the house, nor found any use for the security locker key. I am at an impass, and have no idea what to do, or where to go from here...consider me stumped. I have mixed every possible concoction possible with the chemicals. Hell, I even found one that I was able to blow up a security door, hence no need for the strength potion...but that was it. Never did anything with the container, or the tv and VCR tapes etc in the game room. I never got out of the house.

It seems to me like I am close to getting out of the second floor at least. I put the charged battery back in the crane...now what? I have solved most, or all, of the riddles on the second floor regarding potions. I have the bike key, corporation evidence on DVD. I got past the dog, that is now in love with me...I have not found any motorbike yet, nor any way out of the house?!? I assume that I have solved all previous puzzles on the first floor. So what am I missing? I still have no clue what to do with this damn crane. I am playing this game on a friends I-phone. So no way to save. I just keep restarting every time I make another go at it. Needless to say I could play this game now in the dark. Any help on getting out of the house, or the crane, would be most helpful...thanks, Michael~

Comments (SPOILERS AHEAD)
The games freezed several times after I speak with my uncle and "pressed any key". I had to change the order of things to bring up the yes/no popup.
Also, having to drop the candle before lighting reminds me that the "using an stuffed aligattor to open a door" problem. Maybe I got lazy after so many extra tested/comercial Lucas Arts games... but "use lighter with candle" should work before dropping, and the bathroom description is confusing.
The corporation part is just great and creative. The potions and teleport idea is really good reminding me of old text adventures from my old CoCo - in fact calixto island had a teleporter.
The escape from cell is great, really a masterpiece. But...why everybody died from gas but me?
The second puzzle on mansion is great, really difficult. It would be even greater if it had some mechanical instead of spiritual explanation. The double use of the chair leg confused me, becouse it has to be done in certain order. It took time to realize that after digging the hole i could burn the leg.
Problems -1
Game +5
The fact that the game is large, free, and works +1
Final Rating 5
Thanks!

Michael, in order to hit the target (which is indeed the key to accessing the incriminating information on the corporation which you need to load onto the disc) you need to make another potion, I think it's the last potion listed on the blackboard, but I can't remember if you need to use it on the hydroscope or plasma reactor, though I believe the description should describe the finished potion as smelling of wheatgrass. The bedroll is indeed a red herring.

I posted a link to my walkthrough for The Mansion, so I might as well post one for The Mansion II:
http://speedy.sh/CJcub/Quest-The-Mansion-II-Walkthrough.txt
Please let me know if anything in there is wrong, and I'll change it.
(I know it's more fun to figure out the game for yourself, but against the chance someone's hopelessly stuck, this might come in handy.)

Sooz, do you mean the fire in your uncle's cottage (the real one that you find yourself in when you've solved the puzzle of the dream cottage and spoken to your uncle's ghost)? If so you need to find something made of wood in the room that leads off the kitchen and then use it and the lighter you'll find upstairs to make a fire. Once you've done this remember you'll still need to put something that was once alive (maybe something you already have in your inventory) in front of the fire. Hope this helps.

Rahul, you've done all you need to do with the dvd now, just keep hold of it as it effects the outcome of the game. Now you just need to get out of the building, have you found a way to get to the crane, take the battery, recharge it and refit it? Once you've done that you can use the crane to help you get out of the facility. Post again if you're struggling with any of this.

Allan, if you've definitely fixed the boat, used glue to hold the driftwood in place and attached the crucifix, rope and sheet to it, then I think all you have to do is type 'take boat' when you're stood next to it on the deck, if that doesn't work then try 'use boat'. Hope that helps, you're right at the end now so don't give up!

Allan, yes, you need to make a chemical to put out the fire, the blackboard in the lab will tell you how to make the chemical mixture that varies in temperature, when you've made it you need to put it in the hydroscope to make it cold then you'll be able to use it on the fire. Hope this helps, please let me know if you're stuck on anything else.

That's not the computer you need to use the disc on, the computer you're looking for is behind the sturdy metal door which can be found in the room where the report, manual and motherboard are. To open the door you will need to make one of the potions in the lab, the one that controls muscle strength, you'll find how to make this on the blackboard in the lab, once you've made it you need to put it in the hydroscope rather than the reactor. Use the flask when you're next to the door and it will give you the super strength to break open the door. You open the door by examining it. Then use the disc on the computer you find in the room you've revealed which will load necessary information onto it and go back to the ventilation computer and use the disc on there which will disable the ventilation system.

Davidioan, you need a processor, a hard drive, a motherboard and sticks of ram to fix the computer. The motherboard is in the same room as the report and the manual, once you've read these you will know how to fix the computer and where to find the hard drive. If you go east from this room you will find the ram and a locker which contains the processor. If you haven't already found the key which opens this locker then examine the man in the cafeteria. Hope this helps.

I'm really new to text games, and I'm sure my inexperience is showing here, but I am stuck in the first two cells! I figured out the fork with the grille and I figured out how to deactivate the forcefield, but now I can't seem to figure out what to do next....i just keep going back and forth to the two cells......heeeeellllllppppppp

It might be that I'm new at text adventure games, but I'm really stuck. I can't find the hard drive or Bill, or even the detention center. I've checked all the corpses available. I also can't get the brief case, or get east of the hangar (I'm assuming the computer needs to be put together for that to work) and I can't get past the security door blocking the area c control room. I think I've looked at and examined everything, and tried using everything with everything else, but I just can't figure it out. Is there a walkthrough anywhere?

Gotta give this sucker a full 5 stars, it's brilliant.
Have to admit I am stumped with that pesky robot!
Tip for Steve above, you can open the Area C Control room in a similar way! (Don't want to give too much away :))
If that's the door you are referring to!
Any tips on the robot? Keep thinking I have tried everything but obviously I haven't.

Everything I liked about the original, times two! The potions, the GPT, and the computer repair sequence were my favorite parts. I think I may have a 'fixit junkie' gene; it's satisfying to find all the parts and get something working again, moreso than sighting in and blowing stuff up.
As with the first Mansion, I again had one "big stuck" part - and confess I'd still be shuffling a dead seagull between basement and fireplace (It's a bird / But it's also dead!) if not for looking here and cheating on that bit. My thanks to trentnt on that point. :)
And thanks as well to Nick Dablin for putting together a pair of engaging games. I don't know if it's come up before, but is there any chance of a Mansion III?

Great game. Just wondering though I read up in the comments that there are different endings. Just wondering what these were. I got the yay you left the island with the DVD ending and I'm guessing there is a you left the island without the DVD ending. But is there one where you have to use the 70 odd bullets you have left? Just thinking it would be cool if you got to shoot everyone that was responsible for killing your uncle.

A really good game but I think I hit an error right now and I can't proceed anymore...I dropped the flying duck in the room from where I took it (the room with the other flying ducks) and I can't take it back...Althought it says that I am picking it up I am not...and I think I can't do anything...is there any way to fix this problem? I put a lot of effort to come to this point and unfortunately I don't have any previous location saves...

Yeah, I found it upstairs in the lighthouse, I missed it the first time I visited. I finished, but I wasn't able to figure out what to do with the paper. I think it has the code to the safe in a hidden message on it since it has a chemical smell to it, but none of the chemicals I mixed would do anything to it.

This was a very enjoyable game. I particularly appreciate that the puzzles were not 'pick the right verb' puzzles. I get frustrated at IF games that force you to spend half of your time attempting to lift...no, slide...no, move...no, pull...no, push...etc., when you know exactly what it is that you have to do.
I also liked the double puzzle of the house. Clever.
Well done.
SPOILER!!!!
It is odd that there are no dead bodies upstairs, and no evidence of where everyone went up there.

for who is stuck in the cell, here is some help:
first do you know that uyou can pick up the cot?
just pick up the cot by typing get cot.
now a grille is revealed.
pick the fork up, and use that item on the grille to pry the screws loose.
now go west, pick up the cot, and use that on the forcefield.
also, do this also in your sell.
this will break the forcefields.
in the beginning, you are in darkness, but there is a shape.
pick that up, it's a paper clip.
use that on the handcuffs.

Also, anyone have any idea what to do with the bedroll? Or even if it is useful?
SPOILER ALERT SPOILER ALERT
Ive made a hole in the ceiling to allow water to fall onto the ivy.
Ive lit the fire and dropped the crucifix.
Ive lit the rag in the bottle of vodka and left it in the dark bathroom.
Ive left the seagull in the basement.
This corresponds to the riddle in the desk but nothing is different. Any clues anyone? I dont want a solution, just a subtle hint in the right direction.
Thanks

What a truly delightful game. Reminds me a bit of the old "leather goddesses of phobos" if any of you remember that one. The puzzle with the chemicals is a great addition to the game. I haven't finished it yet, I'm stuck in the Uncle's House (second one, not the dream one) and haven't figured out what to do with the dead seagull, sheet, flaming bottle and crucifix. Excellent so far though and thoroughly enjoyable.

HELP. I love this game but I have no idea what to do now.
SPOILERish
I've got the full run of Area C and I made acid in the flask as I thought it might get through the security door to the areaC control room. But that didn't work and now i'm stuck with a flask of acid that i can't use or pour out. What do I do and is there a walkthrough somewhere?
Thanks Love Louise x x x

Ok, I FINALLY figured it out.
!!!SPOILER ALERT!!! !!!SPOILER ALERT!!!
The problem is that the description of the bathroom
is misleading. It says there is no window and that
it's dark, but the it also says there is a small window.
Also, the trick is not to light the candle first, you
have to put it on the floor and THEN light it! Very
confusing.
Still it's a great game though!!!

Now I'm offically stuck. I am in Uncle's house and have put the fossil on the fireplace; put the plant under the running faucet; put the duck in the basement, but cannot figure out how to "bring light to darkness"....
I did try and light the candle in the bathroom because it says "there are no windows and it's dark", but this is an error here because the discription says there is a small window!
Of course I've gone and left my GPT back at the corporation building, so I can't seem to go and get a chemical of any kind....
***arhgh!!!!!

This is an excellent game. A lot of work must have gone into it. The different combinations of the potions provides a plethora of options!
As ever in these games, it pays to use/examine everything and use anything on everything if you ever get stuck!
Well done, Nick! Look forward to seeing more of your work...

I have really enjoyed this game so far. I haven't finished yet. I'm stuck in the real house right now. Can't seem to figure out the new riddle. Anyone out there who can offer assistance email me ([email protected]). I agree with Steve. I have noticed a few errors but since it is a "mouse friendly" game they haven't been a problem (except that when you are in the dream house you say take flying duck after you have already put it in the basement and it doesn't actually reappear in your inventory). But in the end that actually helped me figure out the riddle. Great game, however now that I'm stuck I can't seem to get a response from the writer???
