The Mansion by Nick Dablin
Your wealthy uncle has just died of a heart attack. You're his only living relative. What's strange is that your family has never had any history of heart problems and he was fit and healthy up until his death. Time to investigate and see if you can find any clues to his untimely death. This is a good old-fashioned adventure - puzzles to solve, keys to find, the usual. Hopefully it's large enough to keep you occupied for a good while! :)

It's a bit fiddly to play. Quite a few bugs in the first room....
I typed:"smash vase"... it told me I'd taken the vase.
I typed: "pick up vase"... it said... as you pick up the vase, you hear a rattling inside.
I typed: "smash vase"... it said you pick up the vase.
I typed: drop vase"... it said you drop the vase and smash it, you take a key.
I typed: "Examine key"... it says you do not have that item.
I typed: "Pick up key"... it says you do not see that.

WALK THOUGH PART THREE FINALE!
Now we can exit the Attic and use the Library stairs any to head Basement Stairs and use the JEWLLED KEY.
Going down the basement stairs we can head east once, south once and west three times to find a small Cell with a BONE of questionable origins.
Heading out of the basement stairs and going west four times and south twice we arrive at a Kennel. Examining the Kennel we meet Daisy, your uncle’s angry god. Give her the bone using the command “ Give bone to Dog ” and the Dog will be distracted, allowing us examine the Kennel again to retrieve the OFFICE KEY.
Head back to the north and to the east corridor on the ground floor to find a door that bears an engraving of a broken key. Use MENDED KEY to access the Swimming Pool Hall. Bypass the Swimming Pool and head to the Jacuzzi where you’ll notice a button. It opens the door to the Dining Room but we’re done with this area for a second. Head up to the Office and use the OFFICE KEY.
In the office there is a two-way mirror that acts as a Window into the Master Bathroom. Smash it with your axe. Climbing on thru the now broken Mirror we find ourselves in a elegant bathroom. All we can find is a DIRARY but we need to pick it up and read it to learn about a LEVER in the Jacuzzi.
Sigh. Back downstairs. Head into the Swimming Pool Hall and “ examine “ the Jacuzzi to find the LEVER. Go out and into the corridor and back down the Basement Steps. Go east, south, west, west, south, east to arrive at the Machine. Use the LEVER on the machine in slot 3 to be notified of a door opening somewhere.
The Master Bedroom upstairs is now open. If we head in we can find the FUSE we need to get the Elevator in the basement up and running! There’s also a wardrobe we can move if you want to but there’s no point.
Starting at the basement stairs go east, south, west, west, north, north to arrive at Elevator Power Machine were we can use the FUSE we found upstairs.
Now we can head south thrice to get to the Elevator that is now working. To select the Eleva

WALK THROUGH PART 2
Now we can head north to find and take the ART GALLERY PAINTING. Removing this won’t trigger any security systems so we can head back to the Art Gallery and remove the DINING ROOM PAINTING and replace it with the Art Gallery Painting leaving us free to take the other painting with us. So, we go back to the Drawing Room and put our newly required Dining Hall Painting in the Empty Frame. This will drop the KEY 004. Take it and head back upstairs. Going in we can find the RUSTY KEY. No need to go into the bathroom in this room.
Heading back into the hall and going north we can see the lock is very rusty. Use the RUSTY KEY to gain access to the Work Shop. We’ll notice a Shotgun Shell Machine and a Blowtorch. Take the Blowtorch and head into the room to the east to find a Box “ examine “ the box and it will reveal there are two SHOTGUN CASINGS inside. Take them and now we have all the materials to make some shotgun bullets! Go back out and use the command “ Use casings on shotgun shell machine “ to add the casings and then the command “ Use pot of gunpowder with shotgun shell machine with casings “ to add in the gun powder. Now take the SHOTGUN SHELLS. Load them into the shot gun with the command “ Use shotgun shells with shotgun “.
Head north, then east then north again to end up in the storeroom. All that’s here is a dress on a mannequin with the SILVER KEY inside it.
Now we can exit the room and head west three times to arrive at a Hanging Basket. We can “ examine “ it but we tip the basket and the object inside falls into the courtyard, which we still down have access to.
Heading north we can access a second set of stairs! You can go down them use the “ Look “ option to open the door for future use to this staircase but we still need to be on the second floor for now. Head back into the Attic Room with the ladder but go north to find a door with an image of a wolf. Use the SILVER KEY on the door to access the Statue Hall.
Take the STONE SWORD from the statue and give it the STONE SHEILD

I just want to start by saying I loved this game but there are a few moments of pure frustration.
I assumed that because I’m not well experienced in text adventures this was on me, but I’ve noticed quite a few comments saying some things are a little off to more seasoned players. Still, like I said great game and I had a lot of fun when I wasn’t entering in the same thing 50 times. For example, the way to ascend to descend the stairs is to look at them, rather than typing “go up” or “go down”.
I liked this and isn’t a weird to me. I also really like the inclusion of the ground floor and later the 2nd floor map! If I wasn’t so stubborn and had used it earlier on it probably would have saved me some time.
One big issue for me was the number of useless items! I am embarrassed by how long I tried to use the cloth, rust remover and empty bottle. I was convinced I needed to water the plant!
I did really like the inclusion of the (literal) red herring but really wished I could have thrown it in the pool and have it do something! The pool was also useless and thought it would be funny to have the red herring do something pointless and have your character acknowledge it.
Anyway, since I have time on my hands, I have taken the liberty to write a walkthrough!
WARNING SPOILERS!!! WALK THROUGH PART ONE!
First thing after the introduction is to go east twice. This will bring you to a door ay the eastern end of the entrance hall that says it has no visible key and that there is an engraving of a music note on the door. Next go west four times. This will bring you to the music room. Take the GOLDEN FLUTE then go north to obtain REQUIEM OF DOORS. This is a sheet of music you will need to play in the grand piano. Type the command “ Use requiem of open doors with grand piano” and it will say a door has opened.
Next go north, east and north again twice. Here you will be able to examine a post-it note with a hint for a grandfather puzzle. You can take it with you if you like.
Then you can go south three times and east on

Hey, I'm in a black and white checkered floored corridor. I can't seem to find my way out, I'm trying to get back out toward the front door of the mansion. I've barely started the game and want to continue, but I won't if I can't find my way out to continue the game. Help would be greatly appreciated:) Thanks

I'm enjoying the game, but can't for the life of me figure out how to get into the courtyard and am annoyed that the game won't let me just shoot the glass doors it mentions 1,434,503 times. Why tell me it would help to have a weapon if I *have* a gun it won't let me use.
I even tried to unload it and hit the door with the butt of the game instead, but it doesn't understand mot of the words in that sentence.

"Now go do something productive...", like playing the Mansion II! Enjoyed this game very much. Not exactly my first text adventure, but the first I've completed properly. Only got stuck once - I didn't figure out that I needed to give the bone to the dog. (Despite my character's concerns, HE didn't seem to mind if it was human or not...). The rest of the gameplay was fun. I didn't have any issue with commands or anything like that - the only time something of that nature happened was with the Dog (again!), when I typed "use bone on dog." I was prompty chastised for attempting to "bash him over the head with it" and told to "try giving it to him instead". 5 stars well deserved. Will help tide me over to the much-belated release of The Room 3....

I've been looking for a non-gamebook game worth giving 5-stars to (I already awarded that score to Victorian Detective 2.) At first I thought I had a eureka moment with this game, but as it went on, things didn't seem to build up, other than the tension of destroying property that isn't yours. The 'good' ending doesn't flow with the player character's intentions, so that also is a little bit of a downer (then again, I know that the sequel compensates for this... not giving any real spoilers, so take that as you will.) Still, most of the puzzle difficulty is exactly at the level that I consider to be perfect for the text adventure medium, and I had a lot of fun exploring the mansion and wondering just what the heck awaited me around the corner. Ultimately, this is a pretty good game that is a charm or two away from being great.
[[[Reviewer's Note: if you're struggling with the command interface, remember that many Quest games love the USE command. In this game, you'll be doing a lot of USE [object] WITH [object], or even just USE [object].]]]

My 1st ever text adventure and I loved it. I'm building a similar adventure and wanted to play something like minded for inspiration. I gave it 4* for the following reasons :
Positives - I enjoyed the humor from talking to inanimate objects to the multiple endings (Save it 1st!) and the end game message.
The puzzles were unique and fitting to the adventure, and with different levels of difficulty.
I did enjoy working out the commands to using certain machines.
The story is somewhat interesting, kept me just interested enough to find out what had happened.
Negatives - You go 'Up' and 'Down' stairs not look at them.
There are too many items that did nothing, maybe you had an idea for these objects and either forgot or couldn't implement them?
There are loop holes in the code that recreate items after you've used them once.
I did have to refer to the Comments section to work out my next move to find the 'code' I should have found in the early part of the game that wasn't so obvious... maybe my mistake for not looking at 'everything'.
Other than that it's a big thumbs up. Thank you. Now off to the sequel...

This would be a great game, but the commands are anything but obvious. I sent way to much time trying to put a painting back, and trying to go up some stairs. Its extremely frustrating at times, which is a great shame, as this has taken the fun out of the game for me. Its a pretty good game apart from that.

This is my first text game. I am enjoying it, but I'm pretty stuck right now.
The furthest I've gotten in the game is getting into Room 001. I don't know what to do next.
What I have in my inventory:
Map
Gold Flute
Empty Bottle
Post-It-Note
Stone Shield
Video Tape
Ivory Horn
Any help is greatly appreciated!

I'd like to make some suggestions for people who are stuck:
1) DO NOT CARRY THE RED HERRING. IT. DOES. NOTHING.
2) If you really, REALLY think that an object you have has served its purpose, put it down somewhere memorable. You *might* need it again later.
3) You will only be able to do some things after you've found information about them somewhere else.
4) Pick up (other than the red herring) EVERYTHING.
5) If you find a duplicate of something, don't pick it up; its just extra baggage.
6) If you get stuck, try wandering around. You may find that you've skipped over something by accident.
7) Use (insert item name here) on (insert object name here) is a VERY useful command.
8) If you have a healthy command over human emotions, you WILL get frustrated. Do not give up. This game is worth it.
9) TAKE BREAKS. TAKE BREAKS OR YOUR HEAD WILL EXPLODE.
10) No, you can't water the plant.
11) It is ONLY a GAME. If it's not fun for you, STOP PLAYING.
Got all that? Good. Bye-bye!

I can't figure out what to do with the horns.
> use ivory horn on carving
- Please select which ivory horn you mean:

You don't have any object by that name.

There's no point putting that on the table.

Gah I am so stuck right now. I just put the ivory horn in the mysterious carving but don't know what to do next. I've got: gold flute, empty bottle, post-it note, stone shield, video tape and red herring. I've been up to the west corridor and bathroom, but not beyond, and up to the dining hall, kitchen and pantry, and in rooms 001 and 003.
I saw something about the flute and the plinth, but I tried using them together and it just said the flute didn't work in the hole. Help!

Sulfly, it's been a while since I played this game so I my memory is a little fuzzy but I'll do my best to help. If you've accessed the garden and met the dog, then you are quite close to the end of the game. You can drop the bottle, you won't need it or the plant to complete the game, it is a red herring and consequently not worth wasting any time on.
You can find something to give to the dog in the cell in the basement (I don't want to give too much away but you will know the object when you find it!). If you haven't found the basement yet, it can be accessed through the door with the emerald on it, the key to which can be found in the ballroom. If you haven't come across the ballroom, basement or indoor swimming pool yet then there is a part of the house you have yet to enter. To access this you need to engage in some more acts of mindless vandalism. Try smashing some of the glass doors along the wooden walkway which can be reached from the courtyard. I presume you've reunited the halves of the key as you'll need this to open the swimming pool.
Hope this helps.

I enjoyed this game very much - it's a real classic text adventure game and totally took me back to my youth! I'm looking forward to my new career as an evil scientist, I think the baddies might get a bit fed up of me spending half the day playing computer games though, although my present employers haven't noticed, yet...

OK, so I restarted the game twice now thinking I missed something. I keep ending up in the same spot. I have both horns. I have been in the library downstairs and gotten all things from there and reading room. Also, I have been in rooms 1, 2, and 3. I have seen mention of the table being moved...I assume that's the one in the dining room? How do I move that? "Move table" doesn't work. Also, the door to the drawing room is locked with Taurus on the door...since the symbol for Taurus is a bull...I assume the horns open this door...I also assume I may need to move the table in order to use the horns...but again...I can't move the table...any help would be awesome! Also...I want to water the plant. I have an empty bottle. Where can I fill it with water? The command "use bottle on sink" in the kitchen only got a response of there is no need to put this in the sink...and it doesn't recognize the word fill or water.

I have just completed this game (and survived). I found it very tricksy (which is good), but only gave it 4/5 due to the verb usage. It does not make sense to me that you have to look at stairs just to go up/down them. What is wrong with up and down.
Similarly, I have issues with the length of some of the item names in the game.
That said, it was fun.
The maps were useful, but in the end I had to create my own - so I could mark the rooms I had visited (and map the rooms that are not on the maps). This helped me to locate the locked door that I had overlooked, which allowed me to complete the game :D

@ dawn153: to play the song on the piano, you have to use the song paper together with the paino in the music room.
@ Morthana iirc the character typed the password in automatically after I read it down in the gallery room... (spoiler: take the painting out of the frame, the security shutters close down, go to the other side of the gallery and investigate the keypad to receive the password /spoiler)
Hope that helps ;)

psymann - The boxes on the right side next to the text are really helpful if you want to know which objects are interactive. For example, the first room is separated into multiple parts, you can only climb the staircase if you move to the eastern part of the lobby (and you start in the western part of it, iirc). Moving through the different parts of the room will unlock many interactions - as a newbie in the field of text adventures I do not know if it is more commonly used to only build rooms that consist out of a single part.
oh, and if you want to use the staircase, just risk a look at it ;)

The plot sounded intriguing, but after playing for a little while, I found I'd learnt nothing about the death at all, and was instead leaving the plot behind to work on unlocking doors, which was a shame. But the bigger shame was that there were so few objects implemented - the room text would tell me about things, but when I tried to examine them, I was told I hadn't an object of that name. For example the very first room talks about candles, a glass-panelled door and a garden - but examining any of those three things fails. More annoyingly, I could see a staircase in the entrance hall, but "go staircase", "go up staircase", "up", "climb staircase", "walk up staircase", "use staircase" - none of these worked, but neither did they tell me why I couldn't go up the staircase which seemed to me to be the natural thing to do with a staircase. From the looks of the maps (and it was a nice inclusion to provide those :-)), it's a good size of game, but it could be improved by being able to interact more with it. I didn't really get far enough through it to be able to review it as such, so just leave this as a comment :-)

AWESOME. Needed a little help with some of the commands -- the whole table moving thing mystified me for ages -- but thanks to the helpful comments, I made it through unscathed. :) The puzzles were straightforward but not TOO easy, and lots of detail in the "unnecessary" interactions that I love, like talking to objects, etc... I have fond memories of trying absurd commands in text games out of frustration and being met with actual responses. Ha. Anyway, off to the sequel I go!

I really enjoyed this game! I hand't really ever played a text-based game before, so I had some trouble. It took me forever to figure out there was a key in that vase! And for some reason I had trouble finding the shotgun shells in the workshop as well. Loved it and am going to start on the mansion II.

Dana - thank you so much, i was getting so frustrated, i thought i'd tried the shotgun so im not sure what happened there! (i did originally try to shoot the dog haha)... I've fed the dog, got the lever and put it in the machine and about to try and figure out where i can find this fuse... but i need a break! ;) Love this game! (first time ive ever played a text adventure and i'm addicted!) x

For some reason I waxed nostalgic for the old adventure games (text type, back when monochrome monitors were the only option!) and found this game. I appreciated the subtle humor built into a few scenes.
Thanks to the programmer for his hard work. The adventure was generally good, although frustrating at certain points. Particularly, it was a bit frustrating to come up with the precise "use x with y" language. (If one could program with variables so that "plug x into y" would work just as well as "use x with y," and "place a into b" would work just like "use a with b" that would be great. Also, if certain elements/objects have no utility to progress the game along, it still would be good to keep the functionality of those objects.
I would've preferred a different ending (I didn't die but my final option led me where I would rather not have gone and left the plot line somewhat unresolved).

Seeing another call for a walkthrough (though EnigmaSilvae soldiered on without one <salute!>), I thought I might post what I typed up when I played The Mansion last year:
http://speedy.sh/Y28DG/Quest-The-Mansion-Walkthrough.txt
If any discrepancies are noted, please let me know and I'll correct them.
(And if this file falls through the storage site's retention policy cracks, I'll try uploading elsewhere.)

This is a great little game. I'd like to give it a 4.5 , but there isn't an option for that.
It would get a five but for a few niggles I have with the game, which I'll explain later however these are just niggles and should in no way suggest you don't try the game.
First, with the positives. I've not played a text adventure in about a decade, but I played a good few half dozen before then and have being playing puzzle games of one variety or another since, and so I think I've got a fair bit of experience under my belt. For the game to have held my interest as it did is a sure sign it had good puzzles, which were well paced with intrinsic rewards set out at appropriate intervals.
Now, onto the niggles, which I hope are taken as 'positive criticism' , and as I've yet to play Mansion 2, maybe Nick's already addressed such issues.
First, and this may be a part of the Quest engine rather than the game design, some of the word usage was inconsistent, for example , sometimes I'd seemingly need to use the entire name of an object, and sometimes only part. I'd guess this is because sometimes there are several variations of an object and the engine would need a way to distinguish which variation I meant. Having said that, it did seem capable of offering me a choice of object if my text was ambiguous.
When using 'look at stairs' which seems to be the only way to use the stairs, the game would double check if i wanted to go up (or down) the stairs. This is just plain annoying, I don't think I ever wanted to just look at the stairs. It would have been far nicer if I could 'use stairs' ,' go up stairs' , or just plain 'go up' . Again this may be more engine than a game design issue.
Things 'magically' appearing in rooms. On the whole, the game is wonderfully logical, with clear, yet devious, puzzles. It does let itself down in a couple of places when thing's appear, just because you know they should be there (I think I'm getting my meaning across without spoilers).
Another possible issue with the engine, rather tha

Cat, you need to go back to the basement to use the lever on the machine in the underground cave (not the elevator power machine, the one nearby), make sure you examine the lever before you use it as you will have to choose which slot on the machine to use it on. Don't give up as you are very close to the end.

Cat, you do indeed need to use the gold flute on the plinth, just type 'use flute on plinth', this will lead you to the emerald key you need to get into the basement then you should be able to find the bone to give to the dog. Hope this helps. As for the silver key, the clue was that it had a matching wolf picture to that on the door on it.

Oh, holy crap. I had to type "use key head with key handle" first, to make it a broken key. Then I typed "use blowtorch on broken key" and it worked fine. I can't believe I just spend a couple hours trying to figure out why this wasn't working, stuck on that. Hah. Anyway, that was dumb of me. Thanks for the response Sarah.

Ah, thank you for the reply. That was my first though actually, but I think I may not be typing it correctly or something. I've tried every combinations of words for it I can...can't get it to work. For example I type "use blowtorch on broken key" then a box will pop up and ask "which broken key?" I've selected both key head and key handle, and it just says "why would you want to set that on fire?" I've tried so many combinations and ways of doing this. Is it possible it's a glitch, or I'm I just doing this wrong?

LT. Barclay, you need to mend the broken key to get into the swimming pool, to do this you need to get the blowtorch from the workshop where the shotgun shell machine is, then just use it on the broken key and you'll be able to get to the pool where you will find the jacuzzi mentioned in the diary. Examining the jacuzzi will get you what you need then you're right on the cusp of finishing the game. Hope this helps.

I don't know if this will get a reply, but I really need help on this. I'm toward the end. I can't seem to get either of the machines in the basement started. I can't find a fuse or lever, and I can't figure out how to fix this broken key. I have both the handle and the key head. I've found the diary in the bathroom. The only rooms I can't get into is the master bedroom, the swimming pool, and the elevator. Please help if you happen to see this and know. I'm losing my mind trying to figure this out, I've about pulled all of my hair out here. Help.

Yes - finally escaped!! A few if the items I didn't use and I did get stuck in so many places! I didn't realise that even if you have already looked or examined somewhere then if more info comes to light from a note/diary etc then you still have to go back and look at those places again, as other things then become available (hope that helps!)

Jessica, you won't have access to the part of the dining room where the painting is for a while yet, it's through the locked door in the dining room which will be opened when you find the horns to fit in the carving. More of the house will become available as you solve more puzzles. Looking at the items in your inventory it appears you failed to pick up the concrete block from the en suite bathroom in the bedroom you already have access to. When you have found the block go back to the dining room and examine the cabinet where you'll find something to help you get the key out of the block, then go to the kitchen and examine the sink which should give you a hint what you should do next. Don't bother with the plant by the way, it's a red herring. One hint in case you've not done it yet, make sure to both 'look at' and 'examine' everything as it often yyields a different result.

There isn't a painting in the dining room for me, where are people seeing this? Also, I'm completely stuck. I have the herring, the key handle, stone shield, post it note, empty bottle, vase, gold flute and map of the ground floor. I've only been into the office in the attic and none of the bedrooms, because I can't find the keys. Any help would be appreciated, because half of the house isn't open to me. Also, how to I get water into the bottle to water the plant?

Luane, if you've taken the painting from the dining room then go back to the gallery and remove the painting from there. The shutters will descend as before but you'll find that if you put the painting you took from the dining room back in the frame it will cause them to raise. Then take the painting that was in the art gallery frame back to the dining room and put it in the frame there and you will get a key. The clue is in the fact that the two paintings have obviously been swapped round since the one in the dining room shows the gallery and vica versa so you need to put them right.

No problem Stacy, glad you finished it, I think the Mansion games are both brilliant.
Huck Finn, not sure what your criticism of this game is, all of the detail just serves to create atmosphere and a coherent narrative, head and shoulders above games where the text is minimal and grammar and punctuation are awful. I've seen a few people criticise perfectly good games as being too wordy recently, but, if you're playing text adventures then basic reading and comprehension skills should not be too much to ask. There is nothing impossible in this game and it can be worked out if you read descriptions carefully and use a little lateral thinking.

Me and a friend got quite hooked on the game, we had first difficulties learning that we have to use the commands "examine" and "use/give .. with/to" to get any further, but now that we got the hang of it, we got pretty close to the end, we thought, when this happened:

A set of elevator doors lie to the SOUTH.

You are in a rickety freight Elevator.
There is the Elevator Button here.
You can go north.
This is a fairly unstable-looking elevator. The power is on. A button in the corner will let you go down.
You can leave the elevator to the NORTH.
> examine elevator button
You can press the button.
- Do you wish to press the Elevator Button?
- Yes
You press the button and the elevator clunks, then begins to descend squeakily. Presently, it stops and the doors open.

Did anybody have this problem as well? We're complete greenhorns in text adventures,

I have just finished the game, great ending. I got stucked at the beginning because this is the first text adventure game i've played, don't really know the rules. There are some command i found on the coments very useful
1. examine (You get hints and sometimes actions)
2. Use... on ... (I tried all the possible combinations, for example use bottle on .....) (this command doesn't apply on dog)
the place i got stuck for a while
1.grandfather clock (look closer)
2.dog (be gentle with puppy)
3.elevator power machine (go find fuse)
all in all, i enjoyed the game so much that I spent the whole sunday afternoon on it. can't wait to play the second part
brilliant

This game is really fantastic. I've started it a couple times over the last few years but this is the first time I've ever been devoted to finishing it. I can be pretty slow & I haven't gotten that far but I seem to be stuck...
I have access to: (first floor) entrance hall, art gallery, music room, art store, west hall, west corridor, bathroom, dining hall, kitchen, pantry (second floor) entrance hall landing, spare room, attic, office. that seems to be it.
The items I currently have are: map, flute, bottle, post-it, shield, key handle, red herring. I already plugged the VCR into the socket.
Help? I really love this game and want to move forward!
Oh, and does anyone know if a) theres a walkthrough somewhere on the internet and b) if there is a mac version of quest? it sucks to keep starting over everytime my internet goes out or I have to close my laptop. But if there isn't... it's worth it. :D

I genuinely enjoyed this game; it has solid puzzles, minus the typical overinvolvement that ruins puzzles. As my intro to Quest, it made for a very favorable first impression.
That said, I was badly stuck before I tracked down this review section for a hint: finding the password for the Keypad had me at a dead stop! :) After that, everything else fell right into place, and I had only my own shortsightedness to blame for missing that particular clue. I think I'll have a crack at the sequel.
Though I've put together my own walkthrough, I'm wondering if the original that was over at GeoCities still exists somewhere?

I really loved this game. I got stuck a lot of times but it kept me trying to solve the mystery. With the help of the comments I eventually won the game. It was absolutely amazing. At first I didn't think it was really special but it grew on me. I liked the story, the descriptions, pretty much everything. Great game.

I played this game yesterday only knowing the commands "look at" and "take". Having found out "examine" is an important command I was able to progress. So far the only bedroom I haven't opened is number 4 and I have a whole load of items but not sure what to do next. (Gold flute, empty bottle, post-it note, glasses, gunpowder book, science book, spider book, stone shield, video tape (watched), ivory horn, ebony horn, cloth, limescale remover, pot of gunpowder, red herring). For example, I don't know how do take the dining room painting and replace it with something else to stop the shutters coming down.
Nicely made game and pretty difficult. It should explain at the outset all the commands - i.e. look at, take, drop, and examine - it was only through reading reviews I found out examine was a command and without this I couldn't have progressed.
Again, really cool game!

This is the first text adventure I've played in yeeeeaaars - I mean like since I was 12 xD I'm enjoying myself thoroughly, but am completely stuck. I've got a gold-flute, a post-it, the stone shield, the concrete block, the key handle and the red herring - I know it's useless, but it amuses me xD I just plugged the TV-VCR thingy in, and now.... I'm stumped. No idea what to do next :(

Sabine, thank you so much, I'd never have thought of that! I've now reached the point where I can get everywhere except the master bedroom and I've got a lever I'm not sure about. Oh, and the elevator fuse is missing. Great game, though I've only been playing for a couple of two hour sessions.
Thanks again

A great game! But now I'm stuck. I have the maps, the flute, shotgun, letter, bottle, post-it note, glasses, both books (science and gunpowder), video tape (watched), cloth, limescale remover, gunpowder, key handle and red herring. I have access to:
Ground floor:
Reading room, Library, Bathroom, West corridor, West hall, Art Store, Art gallery, Music room, Entrance hall, Dining hall, Kitchen, Pantry, Drawing room
Second floor:
Spare room, 002 and bathroom, 001 and bathroom, Entrance hall landing, 003 and bathroom.
I've collected everything from these rooms and used it to gain access to others, but now I'm totally stuck (Oh, I've been up the ladder, too and used the keypad). HELP!!!!

I love this game! Some objects double up sometimes but that's the only issue I found. Love it: try talking to the fridge or to other objects. The author really put some efforts in funny answers instead of only saying that some action would not have any effect.
However, I'm horribly stuck and cannot find any help online. The walkthrough seems to be offline. Could anyone give me a hint?
The only rooms I haven't been in is the master bedroom, changing room at the pool, the room in the attic behind the keypad. I'm also stuck in the basement but I found the diary so I assume knowing how to deal with the pool will bring me a step forward? I'm also missing the second part of the broken key (I have the key head)

Where is the jaccuzi?
Also, I can not find the key handle.
The table worked fine for me; I went to the art store, got the thing in there. Went to the art gallery, then the music room. I got the things in the music room, used the piano, when into the west hall. I examined the things in there, went into the corridor. I got the note from the bathroom, examined the thing in the corridor, went to the west hall then the art gallery, examined the thing in there, went to the dining hall, moved the table. I then went and got the horns, placed them and was allowed access.
For hints, highlite the text below this.
<font color= white>Examine EVERYTHING. Some things must be done before other things will show up. Think logically. Print out the maps, and mark each room you have access to; it will help keep you from getting lost. Unlock/break every door so you can take the shortest path to get places. I had trouble with the concrete block, so do this: Examine the sink, use the bottle on sink, then use block on sink. Dogs like bones; give bone to dog. Pick up EVERY ITEM you have access to. To climb, look at the stairs/ladder. If you don't know what to do, examine every item you have. To examine, you must TYPE examine in the text box. Don't become frustrated with the game. Take breaks when you need to. HAVE FUN!</font>

Sue - yes it does work, do you have both the gunpowder and the shell casings? if you don't mind i'm just going to tell you how it works because when i played the online version it took me FOREVER to figure it out. I tried every command i could think of before i finally got it to work. You have to type "use gunpowder with shotgun shell machine" and then you have to type "use shell casings with shotgun shell machine with gunpowder" I have no idea why you have to type out the whole name or why you have to add the 'with gunpowder' the second time, but that's the only way i could get it to work.
on a side note - anybody else find the other part to the broken key or how to water the stinkin' plant?

No problem James. Glad you liked the clue. It seemed more fun than just telling you.
If you read up higher I had missed the password on the shutter which is virtually in the first room you go in. Spent ages going round and round before I found it.
Get yourself onto Mansion II when you finish this one. It's even better.

I think I'm being a dufus but I can't seem to get into the room behind the keypad in the attic. I'm not sure I have the password yet. I.e., I haven't met anything that says "the password for the attic is...." but I have tried the rat's name, dog's name and various book titles that I've encountered. I'm not even sure I'm using the keypad correctly. I was expecting some kind of dialogue box like the stairs offer. Am I doing it wrong or have I just not found the password yet? the only locations I can't get into right now are the pool, master bedroom and this place in the attic.

Just had to check out the walkthrough as done everything possible, ie, piano, horn, acid etc and got completely stuck. Luckily it mentions potatoes in the pantry but on my version the pantry is empty, its just says something (not highlighted) about storing dried goods. Is this a glitch or am I suppose to do something to get potatoes in there? thanks

Excellent game! My first from this site and it brought back many happy memories of previous dabbles into this genre of game. I find my imagination can be way better than any graphics! ;)
Liked the puzzles... A couple of small glitches, but hey!
For those that are still stuck on this, I would give two hints:
1. "Look at" and "Examine" everything... And I mean *everything*!
2. You may find some "useless" things...
Otherwise, enjoy!
Thx,

The Mansion features correct grammar and is mostly bug free. (Repeat old actions and there can be multiple copies of objects. Trigger the shutters, drop something, then untrigger them, and the thing disappears.)
Had I played it in the 80s, I probably would have found it a good game, but the lock-and-key / unmimetic style has aged poorly.

Okay.. so I'm really stuck. What do I do with the acid in th bottle so that I can use the bottle to water the plant? And what do I do to the plinth? And I've tried countless commands to get up the stairs to the second floor. Can I even use the stairs? Please someone help me.. I feel so inadequate but my mind just isn't looking outside the box for some reason! Lol.. GREAT game and storyline. So far it's a 4!

Ok, right now I feel extremely dumb because I'm stuck in-game a lot earlier than everyone else in desperate need of assistance. At present I've got:
The...
Gold Flute
Requiem of Open Doors
Post-It Note
Stone Shield
Concrete Block
Red Herring (Maybe there is no use for this, but damnit, it's cool)
Doors are locked up to the (east portion of the west corridor), the dining hall, both north doors past the staircase, 001, 002, and 004.
Anyway... hopefully you all don't laugh too much at me. :( It's been a really long time since I've picked up a text-based adventure. We're talking like- the last one I played was Zork on this extremely old PC.
(But- if anyone can help me find my way to a new area, please e-mail me, catch me on msn messenger, or AIM- javalava2001)
Thanks. @_@

I really liked the game, some very nice puzzles and the maps were really helpful. I had some trouble with the horns. Moving the table creates a second wierd machine, you can put one horn in each one - belive me. You can not get them back and you are stuck.
The jacuzzi is full of stuff, every time I examined it the "object" was there again and I could take it. I now have hundreds of them, any buyers? Loved the ax, what a useful tool. Great job and I hope to see more. One of the best text adventures that I have played.
It is possible to play the game by loading the file without extracting...you will not be able to use the floor maps though.

This was a good game. I enjoyed many of the puzzles including the security shutters which I am proud to say I figured it out on my own.
The maps were a nice touch as well.
Only big error keeping it from going to a 5... The weird statue (or whatever it was called) when it is used in the dining room, a second weird statue appears but it seems to be a game glitch. I forgot what the puzzle was exactly, it's been a few weeks since I've played it. It's the room near the front door of the house (one or two rooms to the right).

Hey guys,
Glad you liked my game! I haven't been on here in ages as my computer bew up shortly after I'd finished it and I only just replaced it. I did this game in under a week - so it is possible if you persevere.
Ground floor map should work - I included it in the zip so dunno why that's broken. But the game's not read-only, so you can probably change it manually.
As for a walkthrough - I am working on one right now, so when I've done it I'll let you know! Been so long since I made it, even I'm getting stuck! :(

This is an awesome game! It was challenging but not impossible, and I did manage to get through it. It was discouraging when I died at the end, but I guess that's part of the challenge. Nowhere else before the very end did I find any way you can get yourself stuck or lose the game. This is a good thing. Congratulations!

It's me again, Sam.
I didn't get far in the game when I rated it before. I give it SIX out of five... But it doesn't go that far, so I give it a five. I have gotten heaps far in the game but I can't find what to put in the empty slot to get out of the security shutters. (Don't tell me though! I like finding it out myself!)
