HOW DO I ENTER THE KITCHEN? So stuck!

I have the knight & pawn, detector. *something* in the dog that I can't get out with no weapon. Can't find my other chess pieces. Can't get into the Moonlight Suite. Don't think I've missed anything in the rooms but obviously am missing something. Help!

The lighter is in the briefcase under the bed, it needs a code
x everything and there should be a number in one of the first scenes.
x = examine this is a standard command used on gun and that is the way to check it.
Just started so don't know much yet, but hope this helps others.

Loved it. Completed it without too much hassle - had the right idea most of the time but was struggling to find the correct words to use - LIFT (rather than OPEN) the trap door - LIFT the painting. Got there in the end though. Looking forward to more adventures.

THAT WAS REALLY FUN. your best game in my opinion. wayyy more logical clues than usual. never felt like I was that far off at any point. although the cocktail bit at the end got me stuck for a bit. otherwise great storyline, interesting world and just very entertaining the whole way through.

you are actually not looking for a screwdriver. instead search for something screwdriver-like that will open the remote control. when you gain access to the kitchen, you'll find what you need.

Ok I got past the safe (for those of you who don't know the code it read the books in the study and research Christoper Columbus, it is one of the dates) now I think i am looking for a screwdriver judging by other comments but I cannot find it. Once again, if you see this comment and you know the answer, no matter how long it's been I'll probably see it some other time or other people can use it.

Liked the game, needed some help from comments but this didnt detract from enjoyment. Could of expanded it to include a second floor of the house but its not a game killer.

So, I've just started this game and I'm really excited about it!

One thing though, I've just entered the office and tried to shoot the dog, but I get a message telling me I should check the gun for bullets. I've tried several commands for that and nothing worked, is there something I am missing?

Pretty decent game. I enjoyed the fairly simple puzzles. Could really be improved with a basic spell check - a lot of spelling errors which just made the game OK for me.

I got the Molotov cocktail, but I can't light it. It keeps telling me I need to do something first, but I can't figure out what. I freed Betsy, woke the zombies, etc. Stuck, but I'd really like to see the end of this one before I move on to the second game.

I played this one a few days ago and the puzzles weren't too hard, and enjoyable enough to play without too much frustration. I did get help from the hints here so that probably helped. Really awesome job.

Short but sweet, and probably the most use you'll get from a can of gas in any text adventure! The puzzles are fairly intuitive, and you're not handcuffed overmuch by "guess the verb" -- though 'lift' might have been a problem if not already mentioned in previous messages here. I confirmed my own "Examine vs. Look At" bias by getting stuck for an embarrassing time on the dog's name. The steps required to start the fire only to then immediately want to put it out... genius.

As with any Quest game I complete, I put together a walkthrough:

I'm a little ambivalent about putting these up, since there's the chance a readily available walkthrough will end people asking questions here and erode the sense of community... and yet I'm also thinking of the person who's frustrated at 2 AM (or a day/week/month later) and about ready to give up on the game entirely for want of anyone to get a quick answer from. As your situation dictates, I guess.

Where is this generator?? I've been all over the car park, office, courtyard, garden, and Sunshine suite, examining every minor word I've read, and there's nothing! And is there supposed to be nothing at all in the motel bathroom?

ive already examined everything i could swear but i cant find any more items, input the code to unlock the briefcase, and is there two keycards? cause after i kill the dog im pretty much stuck, and my keycard disappears after opening the sunshine room

Lotte, you need to use the metal detector on the diary before you can use the knife on it to get the bishop. If you haven't already got the metal detector you need to open the safe behind the painting in the dining room. Make sure you 'use knife on diary' while in the Moonlight Suite as, due to a small glitch, the bishop won't appear anywhere else.

Jacqui, you need to examine the sink and use what you find there on the corpse's fist, what you find there will lead you to the key for the Moonlight suite. Just ask if you get stuck again.

Jacqui, you're right, you do need the dog's name for the password, look at and examine the dog's collar and it will give you the answer you need. Hope this helps.

Catalina, if you have already tied the rope to the broken bar on the window you just need to type 'down' or just 'd'. When you get into the cellar type 'use lighter' and you'll be able to look around. Hope this helps.

I'm completely stuck - I've got the collar, newspaper, lighter, gun, rope and remote control and I've shot the dog and read the emails, but I can't get into the house. I've tied the rope to the bars - what do I do then? Also, sometimes it will say 'Game Over' out of nowhere, is that deliberate? I like the game though :)

Jo, the garden/orchard is to the east or west (can't remember which but there's only one direction available anyway) once you've gone through the main gate. You have to examine the tree you find there and then use the gun to shoot the noose down. Hope this helps.

Jessica, since you've already soaked the newspaper in petrol, to make the fire you need to do the following things in this order:
use bucket on fire
use newspaper on fire
use lighter on fire

That should work, ask again if it doesn't.

i dunno what i am doing wron i type examine the gun and it says "i can't see that here!" :( its not im my inventory if that helps ? lol im still stuck ....

this is what happens...

You are in the Motel's Office.
There is a wild dog here.
You can go south.
The motel office is bleak and grey. There is only a small desk and a computer terminal in here.
As you enter the room, you hear a growling coming from somewhere near the back.
As you venture in, a dog jumps out from behind a table and stands growling at you.

> shoot dog
You haven't checked to see if there are any bullets in the gun.

The growling dog, approaches you sowly, it's foaming mouth baring all it's teeth. You can tell by it's eyes that it means to do you harm.

I can't see that here.



The dog pounces on you. In a panic you back out of the office and shut the door behind you.

OK. that should work. you've examined the gun and found you have six bullets. when you see the dog (there may be a pause) shoot dog will kill it. then you have a dead dog.

Honestly, I can't get over the fact that my gun is empty...why? Why do I have an empty gun and no bullets? How hard is it to check for bullets? Looking at it clearly doesn't work...not sure why. I hate that dog now. I can't wait to kill it, but you know, "[I ] haven't checked to see if there are any bullets in the gun." Pretty lame and ridiculous.

Ok, I am clearly the slowest person on here. But seriously, I cannot shoot the dog. I keep trying, but apparently I haven't checked to see if there are bullets in the gun? I have looked everywhere for bullets, but there are none. I have typed every combination of "check" "gun" and "bullets" I can think of. Why would I have an empty gun? I want to play this game but can't even get past square one. Any help would be great.

HI nhannah. THe iron key gets used in the last part of the game. THe linen package has to be opened (or unwrapped i think)

Is there something special about the kennel? I have already killed the dog, mutilated the dog to find the iron key, stole the dead dog's collar, but when I look at the kennel and examine it, the door will slide open, but it won't let me "look inside kennel" once the door is open. Just wondering if I'm not using the verb correctly. Seems like there should be something to do with the kennel...

Awesome game haven't quite finished it take it i am missing a wine bottle to make the molatov cocktail?? mystery man its open or lift trapdoor tried for ages to get into it but you have to use the rope with the bars(come up when you examine window)

Yay, I've finished!!!

Thoroughly enjoyed it!!! The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars was because at times it became a case of 'guess the verb'or 'guess which order I have to drop things/pick them up/use' before they work (i.e. to make the cocktail at the end). Also, I only knew to 'examine' because I've played other games where this has been spelt out for me.

I think throw molatov works, but what roon are you in? You have to leave the gass filled room first and do it from outside somewhere. Try that

Hello - awesome game! These really bring back memories!

I must be beyond dumb though - I can't throw the cocktail at the end! I've left the lab, turned on the gas, lit the rag, freed Betsy, but typing 'throw' or 'use' with 'bottle' or 'molotov cocktail' or anything gets me nowhere! Help!

(Of course - I'm presuming it's the end!)

Hi Steve. You need to get into the kitchen first. If you have lit the fire, you now need to put the fire out so you can get the shiny object.

The use shovel on tree command is only activated after a certain progress point in the game. Have you been given any information about something being buried under the tree?

I have been playing this game on and off for a couple of days, and have finally found all the chess pieces, but can't find what to block the holes in the fountain with. Any clues?

D'oh. You know I tried taking the telescope back out of the statue and it wouldn't let me. Soooo close. I shall go back and do it properly now. Thanks CJ. It's a cracking game notwithstanding my idiocy!

Okay. This is how to make the hole accesible.
Examine the bronze statue. You find the the arms are pullable
pull arms
you here a noise somewhere
Go to the cellar and examine the rack (you wondered why it was empty) the rack has been moved to reveal the hole;

To reveal the entrance. place the four chess pieces in the correct position as directed by the note. This will make the fountain move slightly, closing up the draining holes. The fill the bucket with water again and use it on the fountain (the word 'flowing' in the note was the clue)
This time the water doesnt drain and the entrance is revealed.

I've finished the game now. I made the hole visible and available in the debugger. I still couldn't get the fountain to do anything when I'd put all the chess pieces in the tiles. So I used the debugger to go to the tunnel and finished from there. What was I supposed to do with the pieces in the tiles?

Ok, so I've cheated a bit. I can see from the debug mode there is a hole in the wine cellar. Why can't I see it in the game? The debugger has it ticked as visible. I've been suspicious about the lack of stuff to do in the wine cellar since I first visited it.

I figured that, but have no idea how to get water. It seems, I have tried to use everything on everything & everything on every object in every place.... From previous posts, I know there is a well involved, but have no idea how to get the shovel working here... I feel like a fool, considering so many have completed this, no problem.. Gah! I have lit the fireplace. I'm about to give up here.

I see something shiny in it, but don't know how to get it. I have accomplished everything, except:
Getting in the Moonlight Suite
Getting whatever is in the fireplace
Open both locked doors
Getting what's in the dog
& using the shovel

I'm with Candice. I have the pawn, bishop and king and an iron key. Can't find the Knight, a way to plug the fountain when I pour water into it, or a use for the iron key so far.

I'm only taking a star away because I'm frustrated. I played this in June and didn't finish it. The fireplace disappeared from objects in a room so I couldn't light anything in the fireplace. I restarted it and now I can't find the objects to get to the well. Are these glitches or am I missing subtle/not subtle hints?

You can use the fireplace. But you have to use objects on it.

Excellent, takes me back to the 80's and Zork. I havent played a text adventure for years but "As Darkness Falls" has been an enjoyable experience. I especially like the interconnecting nature of the puzzles to get the 4 keys. A great mix of atmosphere and gameplay. Well done CJ592!

West of the study is the kitchen. The only way to unlock that door is from the kitchen. If you have access to the kitchen just head east and it will unlockthe door.

Use the rope on the well, then use the bucket on the rope, then turn the handle. (If memory serves me)

I am stuck at the well - I can turn the handle, but can't seem to get any water (I assume I need this to put out the fire in the fireplace?). I have a rope, bucket, shovel, but can't seem to use them in any combination to get water.

Thanks, but bit of a bug on I've found which stopped me from finding this obvious combination. Typing "Examine plate" gives the following:

> examine plate
You gain nothing more by examining it.

Typing "x plate" reveals the combination (frustrating to say the least)

> x plate
The number plate looks like it was pesonaised for the owner. It reads "EY4155"

I'm stuck now though. GOt the lighter, but where to find fuel?

Pretty good game. I needed to look at the comments page to get past 1 or 2 points where I was stuck. I also enjoyed "Shiversword: the Beginning" but not its sequel so much. Nice to see you attempting different look and feels for games. Definitely a good thing to remain fresh and original.

Finished it...This was a fun game. One problem --- The "examine (x)" command
isn't listed on the HELP screen. Without this info, I couldn't get past the
dog at the beginning of the game. I almost quit playing until I stumbled across
the "examine" command on the forum...Can't "search" be used as a synonym
for "examine"? I've seen "search" used in other games...

Brent. The brass telescope could be nautical. Is there something standing around that looks like it could hold something? Think Columbus. as for the diary, you don't want to cut it open until you know there is something inside it. Perhaps there is some kind of //detector// that you could try first?

Stuck again. I need to either plug the holes in the fountain (with what?) or get into the moonlight suite. Those seem to be the two things I haven't been able to solve yet. I have the knife and the buckets of water.

Brent- you need to light the fire first. Some coal and some accelerent would be useful.

If you check the base of the chess pieces you will see there is a triangular shape. The same shape shape as the tiles located around the grounds

Ok I have all the chess pieces. Is there a certain way to put them in the fountain? I can read the note and know by that but when I try to use the pieces at the fountain, it doesnt work. Do I have to make it stop draining first and then fill it up with water? If so, I've ran out of ideas how. I can get the water easy, but no clue how to stop the drain. Please help

Yes I realised the glitch now. It doesnt matter where you use the knife on the diary. The bishop will always appear in the moonlight suite! My fault sorry

Ok, I tried using the knife with the diary in numerous locations (the dining room, by the fountain, in the office, outside the office, in the car park, and just now I tried in the Moonlight Suite). The only place it worked properly (i.e. the Bishop automatically appeared as an object that I could pick up) was in the Moonlight Suite.

doh! That was pretty stupid of me. Now, is this a glitch in the game? I found the chess piece in the spine, but suddenly neither the chess piece nor the diary are anywhere to be found? The moment I use the knife to open the diary and discover the chess piece, the diary disappears from my inventory and the chess piece doesn't show up anywhere.

I have three of the chess pieces (all correctly inserted, I believe), and I know the Bishop has got to be in the spine of the diary but I can't use the knife on it (or on the dog, for that matter) because it seems that although having read the diary entry (and the e-mails) it is reasonable to deduce that something is hidden inside, I need to actually make that 'discovery' in the game, somehow. Reading the messages, above, I think I need a metal detector. Any clues where to find it?

(also, I have no idea what to use to fill the holes in the fountain, though perhaps that will become evident later)

You will be carrying something that will help get the noose down.
You can't take the bars, but you can do something wit them (seeing as the window is directly above the trap door)

I don't know what happened with the reference books. When you type in 'columbus' it should come u with two paragraphs of yellow text about Christopher Columbus. Did you get the tape to work in the dictaphone? that was also yellow text!
As for the Moonlight suite. Have you opened the cabinet and got the diary yet? Examine the diary. Hint: There maybe something metal hidden!

ok nm... i finally got the code by accident.. lol.. lucky me... but what i cant find now is the other chesspiece in the moonlight suite. the diary said its in there but the only thing i can open or examine is the cabinet...

That was excellent. I really enjoyed the darkness of it. Maybe there could have been more zombie action, but on the whole the game worked really well. I liked the way the times were used. And the codes needed in the game were fun to puzzle out. Definitely deserves five stars

This is a great game. I am stuck though--i've gotten into moonlight suite but cannot find the chess piece supposedly put there. I also can't open the safe (can't figure out the code!) if that is at all relevant. I have all 3 other pieces in place.
